Adjustment Issues
Adjustment issues, or adjustment disorders, are a group of conditions that can occur when one is having difficulty coping with a stressful life event. This includes serious life events such as the death of a loved one, relationship issues (divorce), or being fired from work.
The inability to adjust to the stressful event can cause one or more severe psychological symptoms. During or immediately after someone experiences a stressful event is when they will show symptoms of the disorder. Mental symptoms can include anxiousness, rebellion, hopelessness, withdrawn attitude or lack of concentration. Physical symptoms can include insomnia, fatigue, body pain or soreness.
The primary goal of treatment for adjustment issues is to relieve the symptoms and to help an individual achieve a level of functioning similar to prior the stressful event. Individuals suffering from adjustment disorder should work to develop and maintain a healthy diet and sleep pattern, as well as a strong social support system.
Recommended treatment includes individual psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, and even group therapy. Most people recover from adjustment disorder without any remaining symptoms if they have no previous history of mental illness and have access to stable social support.
